Sasko Top BakersLiveEnded
#SaskoTopBakers A couple of years ago I started using my passion for baking not only to start a business but to empower others with a skill as I had 9-5. I started by collecting women in the street or we’d get them in my house during weekends and taught them how to bake so that they can also have a skill and start a business. In 2017, I then registered a business as the demand for our products was growing, we opened our store in April 2018, where we still continue to train and empower others through baking. I currently employ 9 people and have 2 students. We could really do with new equipment that will enable us to grow as a business and to take more students as our equipment is deteriorating. We also have kids baking classes where we teach kids as young as 5 years old how to bake at The Bread Box.

MARINA THORNTON ENGELDOE
It is the most refreshing thing to see how many of you are so gifted in your work. It's given me an urge to post my personal favorite baker, my Mom Marina Thornton Engeldoe. We never run out of Sasko flour! 😂 . My mom was retrenched in 2018. She was already 50 and she was not prepared to be intimidated by companies looking for younger candidates. She always loved baking for the family. On birthdays, she'd just rock up with everyone's favorite, chocolate cake. I decided to challenge my mom by promoting her cake and we took in a few orders. A few weeks later, she started baking biscuits and the variety grew from ginger snaps and crunchies to all sorts of biscuits. She started venturing into creative cakes and that's been my favourite. To see the blank canvas of a cake, come to life. She has really tried a bit of everything and is still learning every day. I'm so proud of my mom, for 2 years she's had orders almost every week and the weeks where there is nothing, she is also grateful to rest 🤭. Fortunately, she supplies our family events with cakes, puddings and little bites of goodness, so we get to quality test before she puts it to work 😁 . Her new hobby is trying to perfect royal iced cookies, which is also fly within a gift because we're a whole family with a sweet tooth ☺.

TSHEPISO OF THE GIFTED HANDS
Hi, my name is Tshepiso of Thee Gifted Hands - Cakes a home baker from Soweto. I believe I am a Top baker because I create beautiful and delicious works of art and I am self-taught. I studied finance but left corporate and decided to follow my passion and never been happier. I have always had a passion for baking but started my home business when I was on maternity leave 4 years ago. My business continues to grow and I owe all that growth to my golden passion for what I do. During lockdown, I started sharing my passion by creating and sharing easy-to-follow, step-by-step baking videos on YouTube and Instagram, teaching people how to bake and the feedback has been heartwarming. Now people enjoy baking for their families and some went as far as opening their own businesses using those recipes and have created extra sources of income. This has given birth to my baking classes which recently started and the reception has been amazing. Being a #saskotopbaker will be an honor and will help turn my dreams of growing my home business into a bakery, into reality.

LYNNE FITZGIBBON GLASS
My journey started with my daughter's 2nd birthday. I never thought being late with ordering a professional cake and deciding to take the task on by myself two days before her party, would open up the doors to my life passion. I slowly started learning from there, doing one cake a year for her birthday. The passion grew, and I soon found myself consuming every bit of knowledge around cakes, like a hungry child! Practicing became my new hobby, every free minute I had to spare was spent either researching, experimenting or creating. I was lucky enough to turn my hobby and passion into a career, and I'll never look back. I am now at a point where I can transfer what I've learned to others but also taking joy from the fact #SaskoTopBakers

I’m a Top Baker because I’m passionate, creative, driven and self-disciplined. My love for baking began at a very young age and as I started culinary school my passion for baking grew. I started this journey in 2016 when I opened up Layers, which at the time was known as Tasty Dreams. It’s a home-based patisserie but I wish to expand in the near future, given the opportunity.

My name is Dolly Mokwena. My passion for baking started in high school as I was doing consumer studies. I wanted to do Pastry Chef as a career but my parents couldn’t afford to take me to culinary school so I opted to study hospitality and catering services, later attended cake decorating classes. I started selling cakes on my parents’ 10th anniversary, in December 2016. Winning the competition will help me rent a bigger place as I am using our small kitchen now and space is limited. My dream is to one day own a cake shop and be able to employ the youth of our community and empower them with the baking experience #SaskoTopBakers

Hi, my name is Mathapelo Mogoboya and I am the owner and baker of Just Yum Delicacies. My favourite bake or should I say baked goods are occasional cakes. My love and passion for baking comes from my dad, growing up I would watch him bake our birthday cakes at home, the joy and excitement we had brought a smile on his face even though it was just a simple cake. I knew then, that baking is the career path I want to venture into. I want my customers to experience the excitement I had as a child. Quality taste and appearance are what Just Yum Delicacies gives you. #SaskoTopBakers

My name is Helen Mazibuko, founder and owner of Sugar Lily Cake Studio. I started my bakery after resigning from my full-time job and career due to our family relocation. Since then I have never looked back. The bakery currently employs 4 people on a full-time basis, including myself and two part-time. It has been my vision to be able to contribute in curbing unemployment, and my bakery has been a vehicle to do that. We started in my home kitchen and then recently moved into our current bakery, which is converted from my home garage space. My success is not only for me but for my team as well. It has been quite a journey training them, instilling in them the passion for baking and seeing them buy into the mission of the business, to give the highest level of satisfaction to our customers through our cakes. Winning this will help in the sustenance of the business, finish off our bakery space and help us open a small coffee shop, which has always been my dream. #SaskoTopBakers

Hi! My name is Kurhula, I'm a self-taught creative baker and cake sculptor. I have been running my business Fine Bakes from home since 2018. As a self-taught baker, I had to do lots of trial and error to ensure that my cakes taste as incredible as they look. Cake making isn't #apieceofcake, with long working hours and less sleep, still 👩🏻🍳 , I don't see myself doing anything else! I would love to be one of the #SaskoTopBakers to further grow my business 👩🏻🍳 #SaskoTopBakers

My name is Relebohile, I am a baker and cake decorator! I don’t have formal training but have learned through reading books, and from the internet! I have a home cake business called Flavorsome Bakes and Treats. I am based in the Eastern Cape, in the small town of Matatiele. I love baking, it has become my passion! I love seeing people happy whenever they come to collect their bakes! I am practically obsessed with baking😄 . I bake cakes, cookies, cupcakes, sweet treats such as cake-sicles and cake pops! Baking has provided me the opportunity to make additional income, not only that but to build a network of relationships with other business people and customers in my town and beyond. I am most humbled by the opportunity to assist young people with part-time work during the school holidays! They are excited to learn and also get baking skills. This year I have started baking lessons and it’s one of my achievements, just to be able to share what I have learned with others. I believe that baking is a skill that I can pass on to others, even in my family!
